The Big Flat Now
Project Statement
Jack Self’s The Big Flat Now: Power, Flatness, and Nowness in the Third Millennium, provides audiences with a framework for understanding how our human digital culture has shaped our surrounding digital landscape. Our perceptions of time, space and reality; have been transformed into two universal elements of flatness and nowness.
This concept of flatness will be translated digitally through illustrations created on Adobe Illustrator. In order to conceive of a 3-dimensional shape turning flat; I turned to the flat nets and grids that are used to build 3-dimensional shapes – a call to building cubes and pyramids in primary school. As such, lines and negative space will be the elements mostly making up my web page.
Reflection
This project marked my first experience building a website and challenged me to translate visual language and aesthetic decisions into a digital space. Learning to code became a new design language in itself, requiring a different way of thinking about structure, hierarchy, and interaction. Completing this project gave me the confidence to continue working in this medium and ultimately led to the creation of this portfolio website.
